UK Government Greenlights First Set of North Sea Carbon Storage Licenses: A Leap Towards Net-Zero Emissions by 2050

The UK government has approved the first wave of 21 North Sea carbon storage licenses. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology will enable the storage of industrial CO2 emissions under the seabed. This is part of the government’s larger plan to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The 21 licenses were awarded to companies including BP, National Grid and Royal Dutch Shell. The firms will pump the captured CO2 into depleted oil and gas fields under the North Sea.

This initiative will help reduce the environmental impact of industries. It will also contribute to the UK’s goal of becoming a global leader in CCS technology.
