Clean Energy Boom Outpaces Coal, Keeping Paris Climate Goals Within Reach Despite Pandemic

Germany's Shift from Net Zero Pledge Threatens Green Revolution

The International Energy Agency (IEA) said the clean energy boom is keeping the Paris Climate Agreement pathway open. Renewable energy growth accelerated in 2020 despite the pandemic’s global economic slowdown.

Solar power, the cheapest electricity in history, largely contributed to this increase. The expansion of the renewable energy sector has outperformed coal for the sixth year in a row.

The IEA warns that continued support for renewable energy is vital. Fossil fuel subsidies risk slowing down the clean energy transition. By 2030, annual clean energy investment needs to triple to stay within the 1.5°C Paris target.
