Hydrogen-powered flights could be commercially viable and operational by 2035. ZeroAvia, a company aiming to develop zero-emission air travel using hydrogen, sees the clean gas as the future of aviation.
For airlines operating short haul flights, hydrogen could provide a zero-emission solution compared to electric planes. The technology also has the potential to enhance aircraft lifespan and reduce maintenance costs.
ZeroAvia’s roadmap details a gradual shift from smaller to larger aircraft. By 2023, it aims to service 500-mile flights with a 20-seater aircraft, developing to 1000-mile journeys with 100+ passengers by 2030.
Obstacles exist, but with properly managed risks and a supporting policy framework, the hydrogen revolution could fuel aviation’s future.
